Into the 20 th century, plaster was applied over wood lath spaced half an inch or so apart over the studs or ceiling joists. Several coats were applied, the first keying into the spaces between the lath to make a stable base. Finish coats came after the base had dried. Replace any missing lengths of lath, and refasten all loose pieces.
Use drywall screws, and always drill pilot holes to avoid splitting the wood. Then you can screw new or loose lath to it, as if it were a stud. Drill until the bit hits the lath. If it misses, pencil a mark by that hole. Vacuum the holes and spray them with plaster conditioner. Wait 15 minutes, then fill all unmarked holes with a squirt of plaster adhesive.
Wipe off the excess with a damp rag. Dry lath and the exposed plaster edge will suck water out of wet plaster before it has a chance to harden. To prevent this, saturate those surfaces with conditioner. Wipe up any drips or overspray with a damp rag.
Wait until the conditioner dries—about 20 minutes—before going to Step 4. In a clean bucket with cool tap water, mix Plaster Magic patching plaster to the consistency of natural peanut butter. Using a margin trowel, smear the mix against the old plaster edge, as shown, and over the lath. Keep this layer recessed by half the thickness of the original plaster. Rough up the patch by scratching it with a scarifier, then scrape any blobs off the wall.
Wait until the scratch coat is firm to the touch—about an hour—then mix up a new batch of plaster to a slightly thinner consistency—closer to that of buttercream frosting. Use a plastering trowel to smooth the mix flush with the wall surface; scrape any excess off the wall. Wait another hour for that coat to set. Using a 6-inch taping knife, scrape the patch area smooth, and cover the patch with a thin layer of ready-mix joint compound. Let dry overnight.
Gently scrape it smooth and apply a second coat. Mid-size and large holes will require a wooden brace, a drywall patch, drywall mesh tape, and drywall compound. Virat Kohli and co. Tips and tricks for drywall patching Regardless of the size of the hole, there are some steps you should take to ensure your repair is virtually undetectable once it's finished.
Match the paint. David Steckel, a home expert at Thumbtack , says that paint shouldn't be an afterthought. If the area is textured, you'll also need to apply that texture so the repair blends in. McGee says "orange peel" and "knockdown" are common types of textures. You can purchase drywall texture spray cans and apply them like spray paint. Primer makes a difference. Before you paint, McGee recommends applying a primer to that area to seal the new drywall and joint compound. But if you seal it before applying the finish paint, he says the repair will be undetectable.
Keep things clean. Also be proactive as it relates to messes. Prep your tools in advance. Prep the area you're patching, too.
Regardless of the hole's size, he says you'll need to do some prep work. Remove loose drywall debris. Sand down rough edges with sandpaper.
Wipe the area with a damp cloth to remove dust. Fill the hole. Apply joint compound with a putty knife. Steckel recommends Drydex ready-mixed drywall compound, which will go on pink but turn white when it dries.
Allow it to dry. This can take 15 to 30 minutes, but the specific drying time will be listed on the product. Finish the repair. Sand the area smooth until it is flush with the rest of the wall. Apply a coat of primer and paint. These are his instructions for fixing a medium-sized hole: Clean the area. Remove any loose drywall debris and sand the area smooth.
Place a small piece of wood - like plywood or 1x3 - through the hole and attach it on both sides across the opening using drywall screws. The wood provides backing. Cut the piece of drywall with the razor knife to size and place it in the opening.
Using a screwdriver a power screwdriver is recommended secure it to the piece of wood. Tape the seams. Place mesh tape over the seams of the opening around the drywall patch. Apply joint compound.
With a putty knife, apply joint compound over the mesh tape and screws. Let it dry. Sand any imperfections in the dry joint compound until the area is smooth.
